There is always another horizon.

Big topics, local perspectives. Asking how global conversations connect with life closer to home. This month: the energy bill, and what one street did about it.

The bill on the kitchen table

Energy prices are a national story. On Rua das Flores they became a spreadsheet, kept by a retired accountant, with 42 households on it.

Once you see your neighbour pays half for the same flat, you stop blaming the weather.

Ana, who keeps the spreadsheet

What the street found

Measure	Average before	Average after
Monthly bill (USD)	148	109
Households on a fixed tariff	12	36
Homes with draught sealing	4	29

The steps that made the difference

1. Compare bills openly, with names removed.
2. Switch the worst tariffs first, together, for a group discount.
3. Fix the cheap things: sealing, bulbs, timers.
4. Only then look at the expensive upgrades.

What is still open

• Rented flats depend on landlords agreeing to upgrades.
• The group discount ends next spring.
• Nobody has found a supplier willing to publish its full tariff list.

There is always another horizon. On this street it is the next bill, and the plan is to be ready for it.
