What makes a moment go viral?
THE MINUTE DAILY / VIRAL

A closer look at the clips, ideas and community stories that catch everyone’s attention. Last month a bus stop went viral. Not a famous one: the one outside the number 14 school.

What people actually shared

A parent painted the bench in the school colours and added a small shelf for schoolbags. A photo of it was shared 60,000 times in a week, mostly by people asking why their stop did not have one.

I did not think anyone would notice. The shelf cost eleven dollars.

Rui, who built it

Three reasons it travelled

  1. It was cheap enough that anyone could copy it.
  2. It solved a problem every parent recognised: bags on wet ground.
  3. The photo had a kid in it, grinning.

The part that does not go viral

  • The council asked for the bench to be removed. It was not.
  • Rui now fields requests for measurements every week.
  • The school started a design club around the idea.

A viral moment is a story with its middle missing. The middle is usually where the useful part is.
